How does Ozempic work for weight loss?

If you’re looking for an effective weight loss solution, Ozempic may be a good option.

Ozempic (Semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable medication that can help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and aid individuals who are trying to lose weight in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

How does Ozempic work?

Ozempic is self-administered under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once a week on the same day using a pre-filled pen.

It works by binding to GLP-1 receptors (naturally occurring hormones found in the brain and pancreas) that are responsible for regulating hunger and enhancing insulin secretion when blood sugar levels are high.

This gives you that ‘full’ feeling and reduces the rate of gastric emptying. As a result, it suppresses your appetite and cravings which can lead to weight loss.

Dosage must be increased gradually over 16 to 20 weeks, starting at 0.25 mg  for the first 4 weeks to give your body a chance to respond to the medicine. Your health care provider will then prescribe 0.5 mg at week 5 to be used for at least another 4 weeks. If your body responds well, the maximum dosage given is 1 mg for additional control.

Who can use Ozempic?

It’s important to remember that Ozempic is not a miracle drug and is aimed at patients with a BMI greater than 30, or at least one weight-related illness such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

However, it is not suitable for pregnant women, people with a family history of thyroid cancer, or those with kidney or pancreas issues. Consult with your doctor before starting Ozempic for weight loss to see if it’s right for you.

What are the side effects of Ozempic for weight loss?

Ozempic has been approved for use by both the NHS and FDA. If your doctor determines that it is a safe and successful for use, some patients may experience possible side effects of Ozempic during treatment, including:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea

These side effects will eventually subside over time for most individuals.
